Abstract: Pit and fissures are highly prone for dental caries. The plaque retentive nature of pits and fissures make them difficult to clean, thereby causing them to be more susceptible to caries than smooth surfaces. Apart from the usage of fluoride and regular oral hygiene, one of the most important prophylactic approaches against the occurrence of dental caries is the sealing of pits and fissures. Sealing the pit and fissures with sealants is considered to be highly effective in the prevention of pit and fissure caries. Occlusal sealant materials are numerous but resins, composites and glass ionomers comprise the main materials used for sealing pits and fissures. Long term success depends on Regular checkups and the renewal of the sealing if required. This review highlights the recent advances in pit and fissure sealants used in pediatric dentistry.
